When kids are at certain ages you as the parent have more of a say over what they eat and what they do. So seize the opportunity now and get them on a healthy and balanced road. Now when I say that, I don’t mean for you to start training future Olympic champions but just start by introducing them to a healthier lifestyle. Even if they’re older you can still do a little pushing and encouraging.

on the diet side
Try bringing in more fruit and veg(especially the leafy green) and introducing them to healthier foods. And no excuses there are many out there. Even in their teens you should still try and keep the fridge and cupboards filled with more healthy foods. Swap that white bread for whole meal and those sugary no good cereals for wholegrain cereals or oatmeal.

On the fitness side
As exercise is a VERY effective way in lengthening bones try and encourage them to get active. Experts even warn you could be storing up serious health problems if your younglings don’t exercise more. Instead of staying at home watching TV or playing video games you can get them to engage in an activity of their choice, something that they actually enjoy taking part in. Here are a few options:

Walking- A very simple way to get fit. If places to visit or get to are in walking distance then leave the bus and car alone!

Swimming
- A great way to work all muscles groups, burn calories and strengthen the heart. If they don’t know how to swim just stay where they can see you or even better you can go down with them in the pool for support

Football- A good old kick around the park or garden can be appealing to most boys and even girls. If they take an interest to it then getting them to join a football club after school or in the summer shouldn’t be too difficult

Bike riding- Riding to the store, to school, out with friends or with you, a great way to strengthen the muscles and burn calories

Dancing- Put in a cd or turn on the radio and get them dancing. And if you let them choose they’ll be much more enthusiastic

Skateboard/scooter/rollerblades
-Get the knee pads and helmet and they’re good to go. Good way of toning muscles and improving balance and coordination

Skipping- Cheap and cheerful and doesn’t require allot of space. Great aerobic exercise keeps them fit and tones the muscle

Climbing- Swinging about in the park like crazy! Something most kids will enjoy doing and at the same time a great workout

Trampolining- They’ll love this one, as well as being fun also gets the heart pumping and improves balance and tones the muscle

All important sleep
Sleep is vital for proper growth. As well as waking up more alert more active and being able to concentrate more sleep is also very important in growth as this is the time when HGH is secreted and they actually grow. So keep allowing them to sleep late and get small amounts of hours of rest and they won’t grow as tall as they could. If they’re teenagers just let them know what to do and tell them the consequences of not doing so and the rest is up to them.
